The US government has reopened following its longest-ever shutdown, setting the stage for the eventual release of the gold-standard federal data that is crucial in analyzing the health and trajectory of the nation’s economy. US Mortgage Rates Rise Slightly, Sending 30-Year Loans to 6.24% on Average

Mortgage rates in the US increased for a second week, adding to costs for homebuyers already facing a precarious economy.

The average for 30-year, fixed loans rose slightly to 6.24%, up from 6.22% last week.

Homebuyers have been reluctant to jump into the market, even with rates now well below year-ago levels.

Choppy Market...No More Fed Rate Cut?

Persistent uncertainty over AI prospects and the interest rate outlook buffeted U.S. stocks as the market rallied on Monday and then sold off on Thursday. Bond market traders dialed back their expectations of an interest rate cut at the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting scheduled to conclude on December 10.

Shutdown Market

The U.S. stock market appeared to take the 43-day government shutdown in stride. The S&P 500’s closing level on Wednesday—the last day of the shutdown—was 2.4% higher than on September 30, the day before the shutdown started. Government bonds also largely held steady, with the 10-year yield at 4.07% on Wednesday versus 4.15% pre-shutdown. (Read More)
