Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a hawkish address at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, signaling that interest rate hikes remain possible if inflation fails to reach the central bank's 2% target. Warsh also advocated for a quieter central bank and rejected the traditional use of explicit forward guidance to manage market expectations. (

Stock Market Volatility is at a YTD Low

The S&P 500, NASDAQ, and Dow posted fractional weekly gains, regaining ground from the previous week’s modest declines. U.S. stock market volatility fell on Friday to a year-to-date low on an intraday basis. The Cboe Volatility Index fell to as low as 14.1 in morning trading before closing at 14.4, down from a recent high of 20.9 reached on July 29.

Inflation Remains Elevated as Energy Costs Push on Prices
The stubborn U.S. inflation problem did not get much worse in July. It did not get any better, either.

Consumer prices were up 3.7 percent in July from a year earlier, according to the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation, the Personal Consumption Expenditure price index. That was the same rate as in June, and still well above the Fed’s target of 2 percent annual inflation.

Big Real Estate Lawsuits

Zillow and Redfin have reached a settle-ment with the FTC and 5 states, resolving an antitrust lawsuit over their apartment listings partnership. The FTC order req-uires Redfin to reenter the market and invest $10M+ to become “a far stronger competitor”. The order will also require Zillow to help Redfin recruit new employ- ees from its worker base. The order also allows Redfin to continue to repost Zillow listings not considered anticompetitive.
