A Down Week in the Stock Market

The major U.S. stock indexes fell around 1% to 2% as shifting narratives about AI prospects and technology stocks continued to drive the broader market. Core CPI held steady at 2.6% year-over-year through December 2025, below expectations, signaling resilient disinfla-tion especially in housing amid a broader CPI at 2.7%. WSJ economist surveys pro-ject 2026 core inflation at 2.4-2.6%, temp-ered by tariff risks from new policies but supported by moderating shelter costs and economic resilience.

Yields Fall

Prices of U.S. government bonds rose, sending yields lower, after softer-than-expected inflation data boosted investor optimism about the prospect of additional interest (and Mortgage) rate cuts in the coming months. The yield of the 10-year U.S. Treasury finished the week at a year-to-date low of around 4.05%, down from about 4.20% at the end of the previous week. (Read More)
