August brings one of New York City's most magical cultural traditions: free Shakespeare performances in the city's parks. This month, experience world-class theater under the open sky, from the iconic Delacorte Theater in Central Park to intimate neighborhood park productions throughout the five boroughs.
The Crown Jewel: Shakespeare in the Park
The 2025 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night begins performances on August 7 and runs through September 14 at the newly renovated Delacorte Theater in Central Park, featuring stars like Peter Dinklage, Lupita Nyong'o, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The beloved series returns to its stunning amphitheater setting, where the Manhattan skyline serves as a backdrop to the Bard's timeless stories.
Getting Your Free Tickets
For the best chance at tickets, aim for the first week of performances—seats are always in greater supply early in the run before reviews and word of mouth increase demand. Tickets are distributed via digital lottery and same-day in-person distribution at the Delacorte Theater, starting at noon on performance days.
Beyond Central Park: Neighborhood Shakespeare
Free outdoor Shakespeare performances also take place at multiple locations including Robert Wagner Park at 20 Battery Place in Battery Park City on August 9, and Rockefeller Park from August 12-16. These intimate productions offer a more personal theater experience, often with innovative staging that takes advantage of unique park settings.
The Roving Theater Experience
NY Classical Theatre presents immersive Shakespeare productions where audiences follow the action through different areas of the park. Their bold, family-friendly approach makes Shakespeare accessible to newcomers while delighting theater veterans. Remember to bring your own blankets or chairs for these performances.
Park Performance Etiquette
Arrive early to secure good viewing spots, especially for popular productions. Pack light snacks and water, but avoid noisy food packaging. Turn off phone notifications and be mindful of other audience members when taking photos. Most importantly, embrace the unique energy of outdoor theater – the occasional airplane overhead or park wildlife becomes part of the magical experience.
Weather Backup Plans
August weather can be unpredictable, so check each production's policy on weather cancellations. Some performances continue with light rain, while others may be postponed. Having a backup indoor activity planned ensures your evening isn't lost if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate.
Free Shakespeare in NYC's parks represents the democratic spirit of great art along with, world-class performances accessible to everyone, set against the backdrop of the city's most beautiful green spaces.
