New York Residential Real Estate

New York City registered 204 real estate transactions totaling $284 million before 4 p.m. on November 5. The top residential sale was a five-story townhouse at 48 East 81st Street on the Upper East Side, which sold for $16.8 million. This 7,400-square-foot home, fully renovated in 2019, features five to six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and expansive living space.

U.S. Stock Market

US futures showed a modest rise after a challenging trading week led by losses in the major technology companies, which pushed the Nasdaq down 1.9% and the Dow nearly 400 points. This week, all three major indexes are in negative territory, driven by job cuts reaching a two-decade October high and investor concerns about inflated tech valuations. (Full Story)

U.S. Inflation & Federal Reserve
Several Federal Reserve officials publicly voiced concern that U.S. inflation remains stubbornly above the central bank’s 2% target, even as financial markets expect a rate cut soon. Last Tuesday, the Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani decidedly won the mayoral race in NYC. This has triggered worry amongst many owners and investors, some threatening to divest and leave the city. As the government shutdown extended into its sixth week, the absence of Friday’s monthly jobs release again left investors in the dark about the state of the labor market. Nevertheless, a private release shed light on recent weakness, with a reputable consulting firm reporting that job cuts in October totaled 153,000—nearly three times the figure recorded in September.
