What is the story of foreign students finding rentals in NYC, now that the new tenant regulations don't let landlords ask for additional security deposits anymore?
Traditionally landlords request the full year’s rent in advance or an local guarantor making 80-100 times the rents for foreigners renting w/o jobs and/or credit history. The new laws do not prevent landlords from doing the adformented.
Extra security deposit monies are usually asked from tenants with pets. Now that it is illegal to do so, will landlords stop allowing pets? Alternatively, they may institute a pet fee or surcharge which would actually cost the tenant more money as they would not get any of it back (as they would in a security deposit). The new tenant laws were to appease the far left. I predict it will be them who will he left out. :)
