If you're buying a home, you can to purchase "discount" points to lower your interest rate - but you could also use that cash to make a larger down payment. Use this tool to help you figure out what makes sense for you. One point costs 1 percent of your mortgage amount, or $1,000 for every $100,000. So one point on a $400,000 mortgage would cost $4,000. More house hunters are trading longer work commutes for lower home prices. NYC, SF, & LA are among cities that have seen home prices rise faster in farther-flung neighborhoods compared to those closer to business centers.
