New York Is Staring At A Dangerously Divided Future

Eric Adams, New York’s media-savvy mayor, caused a storm this week by pledging to take mentally ill people from the city’s streets into hospitals, on an involuntary basis.

Homelessness and crime have sparked rising angst in the Big Apple, and both can be linked to untreated mental health issues.

Markets Start Dec. Looking for Direction

Stocks kicked off the final trading month of 2022 in a fickle fashion, as traders and investors digested a series of economic reports and Wednesday’s comments by Federal Reserve Chief Jerome Powell.

A reading on U.S. manufacturing activity contracted for the first time since the height of the pandemic. Personal consumption expenditures price index (the one the Fed pays most attention to) rose 0.2% in October.

The Fed’s Preferred Inflation Gauge Slowed In October

A measure of inflation that the Federal Reserve watches most closely is showing signs of moderation, though price gains still remain too fast for comfort. Inflation showed welcome signs of slowing in October, it remained uncomfortably rapid even as a spate of economic data underscored that a return to normal price increases could take time.
