Job Creation Sputtered in August

Adding to recent signs of labor market weakening and likely keeping the Federal Reserve on track for a widely anticipated interest rate cut later this month. Non-farm payrolls increased by just 22,000 for the month, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%. While this is not great news about the economy, it may just be the exact news the FED will see as solid evi-dence that a rate cut is needed. (More)

Lowering Interest and Mortgage Rates

The 10-year rates ticked down to 4.08% which could be good for lowering mortgage rates. In fact the average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage dropped 16 basis points to 6.29% yesterday, marking the lowest rate since October 3 and the biggest one-day drop since August 2024. Rates are finally breaking out of the high 6% range, where they’ve been stuck for months. (Full Story)

Stock Market Ended Flat Last Week

The S&P 500 rose fractionally and the NASDAQ added around 1% for the week, offsetting the small declines that both indexes posted the previous week. The Dow was down fractionally for the second week in a row. Each of the major indexes remained within a few tenths of a percentage point below recent record highs. (Full Story)

Investors Brace for September Volatility

Markets showed increased volatility last week, breaking from a summer lull. Concerns over Federal Reserve independence and this administration's tariff policies added to investor uncertainty. The volatility index (VIX) hit a four-week high amid rising Treasury yields. Investors are wary of elevated. (Full Story)

Inflation Holds Steady in July 2025, Core Inflation Hits Five-Month High

U.S. inflation stayed steady at 2.7% year-over-year in July with sectoral shifts: prices rose faster for used vehicles and transportation services, while shelter inflation moderated slightly, and energy costs declined.

Core inflation excluding food and energy accelerated to 3.1%, its highest in five months, driven in part by tariff-related cost increases. (Read Full)
